Meet the Trainers...

Troy Stewart

Having established a successful personal training business, in 2008 Troy founded East Side Crew with the goal of building a “crew” of people that shared common fitness goals and who could train together, motivate each other and socialise together.

Troy previously competed as a Surf Life Saving Iron man.  When he retired from after six years of competition, he missed the competition and camaraderie of training with other like-minded athletes.

Kimmy Smith

A former NSW Swift and Australian netball squad member, Kimmy joined East Side Crew in 2011 following her retirement from professional netball.

Kimmy's words

I have always loved being fit, healthy and training hard. I love the high that you get following a tough training session and the self confidence that people develop from discovering what they are capable of through exercise. I believe it is important to make sure that you are always enjoying what you are doing and reward yourself for the hard work you put in. Exercise impacts on every area of your life. When you are training well, you are more confident, more motivated to eat healthy and nutritious foods and have more energy to enjoy your life. My background as an elite athlete has provided me with a lot knowledge and skills, and I feel lucky that I am know able to share this knowledge with our Crew members. For me, a healthy life is comprised of the following key factors:

  1. Nutrition
  2. Exercise
  3. Relaxation
  4. Enjoyment

Meet The Crew

Troy Stewart

I wanted to try to get back some of that camaraderie that I was missing so much.  East Side Crew has evolved with the help of my fantastic business partner and great friend Kim into a successful group of amazing people that share our interest and drive for a healthy/fun lifestyle.

Why I love East Side Crew

Each year as a group we enter in events like ocean swims, fun runs, the City 2 Surf, mud runs and do the Wanda Sand Hills. It’s the best way to get to know everyone and see everyone achieve their goals. Most of all I love the celebration that come after each event! Any excuse for a beer!

I believe regularly setting yourself goals gives you direction and motivation at training and helps you to push through the tough day to day sessions. We all lead really busy lives and it is easy to put training aside or put it off all together.  When I have direction, I feel motivated and my intensity lifts at every session.  When I am focused and training for an event, I feel like every other aspect of my life improves. Not only are you training harder and getting more results at training, but your mind is clearer and you feel happier.

Every couple of months I like to set myself a new challenge and new goal to help keep me on track. Having different events to train for also breaks up the year so that I’m not doing the same thing all the time. This keeps me injury free and mentally fresh for the next challenge.

My Favourite Session

My favourite training changes depending on what my goals are and what I am focusing on.  At the moment, I love doing the circuit sessions with the guys, but this will probably change next month when I start to focus on the running season coming up.

Why I love East Side Crew

I joined East Side Crew in September 2010 and I just fell in love with it. People often tell me that it is the best part of their day, and that is so true. Exercising, being at the beach and watching the sunrise makes you feel incredible. But that is just such a small part of what East Side Crew is about.  One of the most rewarding things for me is helping to inspire others to be fitter and healthier because I know that it will make them happier.  It is such an amazing feeling to help someone achieve their goals, and to see them so proud of their achievements. I have made some amazing friends through East Side Crew and it has really made me a part of the local community.  I love that we help to raise money for charity each year and are able to give back to our local community.

I have always loved exercising and feeling fit and strong. I am a naturally competitive person (that is a little bit of an understatement, but we’ll go with it!), so I always try to push myself to train as hard as I can and to be as fit as I can.  My magic formula to get the best fitness results for myself is 1-2 strength sessions a week, 2-3 running sessions and one cross training session which I just go to enjoy moving.  I also spend at least 30 minutes a week to stretch. I really believe that everyone has it in themselves to be fit and healthy, the hardest part is just getting started. When you are starting out on a new training program, take it easy on yourself and enjoy all the small victories along the way. The more you enjoy what you are doing, the more you will want to keep going and the fitter you will become.

I develop all of our Challenge nutrition plans based on the way I like to eat. Natural unprocessed foods that nourish your body. No gimmicks, no cutting out whole food groups and definitely no starving. I really believe that if you can focus on giving your body the best food possible as often as you can, you will get the results you are after.  I love to eat well. It makes me feel good, it helps me at training and with recovery and it makes my skin better. Enjoy eating good foods and also enjoy the occasional treat.

My Favourite Session:

I love the Saturday morning Run Club. The atmosphere at those sessions is incredible. Everyone is so positive and happy and really excited to be pushing themselves to achieve their goals. It is my absolute favourite way to start the weekend.
